Brooke, "you get one shot" landed differently for me. I'm working on a 92-year-old physician's memoir right now — he can no longer read or write, so every session is literally the only chance to get a piece of his life on the page before it isn't possible anymore. Not the boldness kind of one shot, the closing-window kind. But your line about pre-writing your own rejection stuck with me too — I catch myself doing a version of that with how much material to leave in versus cut, second-guessing before anyone's actually seen it.
